I'm absolutely thrilled that you chose me as your photographer for this special time. Maternity sessions are such a beautiful way to capture the anticipation and excitement before your little one arrives.
This guide I've put together is packed with all the information you'll need to make the most out of your session. Trust me, taking a good read will be totally worth it!
I want to ensure that we capture those priceless moments perfectly, so you can cherish them forever.
If anything in the guide is unclear or if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help and make this experience as amazing as possible for you. Let's create some stunning memories together!
We will discuss your vision for the session to determine the best location for you. My personal recommendation for Maternity sessions is Pegasus Beach. It provides a lot of variety with tussocks, driftwood, sand walkways, the ocean, reflections and most of all beautiful light and open spaces. It is also a great location if you choose to include partners and children into your session.
If you're choosing your own location, there are a few things to consider. The most important factor is the light. During sunset, also known as the golden hour, the light is magical. Before sunset, it's best to have the light behind you or to the side of you. As the sun sets and afterwards, it's great to face the light or be positioned sideways to it.
When selecting a location, I look for big open spaces with elements in the foreground that create a dreamy and creamy background. Think long grass, tussocks, fences, gates, old buildings, tracks, and even reflections. Anything natural or rustic adds a nice touch. If sunset doesn't work for your chosen location, we can also schedule your session at sunrise. Just keep in mind the lighting during that time.
If you have a specific location in mind, I'm more than happy to come and check it out. You can also send me photos of the location, and we can discuss if it would be a good fit for your session.
Capturing the most magical moments during your maternity session is all about the light. That's why I exclusively schedule sessions during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. That is the hour before sunset and the hour after sunrise.
During these times, the light is soft/flattering, warm, and creates a dreamy atmosphere that perfectly complements the beauty of your pregnancy. It's when nature paints the sky with breathtaking colours, casting a golden glow that adds a touch of enchantment to your photos.
To ensure we make the most of this incredible light, it's crucial that you arrive on time for your session. The golden hours are fleeting, and the light changes quickly.
Being punctual allows us to take full advantage of this magical lighting and capture stunning images. Please remember to plan your schedule accordingly and arrive a little early to settle in. This way, we can start shooting right when the light is at its most captivating. Trust me, it's worth it!
Getting professional hair and makeup done for your maternity session is not necessary, but it can definitely add an extra boost of confidence and make you feel amazing during your photoshoot! If you decide to go for it, I highly recommend it as a great idea.
For long hair, beachy curls look absolutely stunning and create a beautiful, relaxed look that complements the beach setting perfectly.
As for makeup, aim for a natural look with a touch more than your everyday routine. Remember, the goal is to feel comfortable and like the best version of yourself. If you choose to do your own hair and makeup, don't worry! Just follow these tips and you'll look fantastic.
While not necessary for most of my clients it is a good idea to think about whether you have any meaningful props or accessories you can bring to add a personal touch to your maternity photos. Here are some ideas:
1. Ultrasound Photos: Including ultrasound photos in your shoot is a beautiful way to showcase the anticipation and excitement of your little one's arrival. You can hold them in your hands or place them on your belly for a heartwarming touch.
2. Baby Shoes: Displaying a pair of tiny baby shoes in your photos symbolises the upcoming journey of parenthood. It's a sweet and adorable prop that represents the little one who will soon fill those shoes.
3. Floral Crowns: A floral crown can add a touch of natural beauty and femininity to your maternity photos. Match the colours of your outfit. It's a lovely way to embrace the blooming season of motherhood.
Remember, the props and accessories you choose should reflect your unique story and connection to your baby. They will make your photos even more meaningful and memorable.
If we have howling wind or rain, we'll reschedule our session. I'll always reach out to you the day before or the day of our session to confirm. Outdoor photography is always exciting because it's never the same, right? I cannot guarantee specific weather, but whether it is moody clouds or golden or pastel light your session will be unique to you and a beautiful reminder of this day and this special time. Remember to come prepared with appropriate clothing layers or umbrellas in case of unexpected changes in weather. It’s a good idea to bring a jacket for between photos if it's windy or cold.
If there are any photos you have seen on my Facebook or Instagram that you love, please let me know so that I can keep that in mind for your session.
Your comfort is essential during a maternity session. Here are a few tips to keep you comfortable throughout the shoot.
Hydration: We recommend bringing a water bottle to keep yourself refreshed throughout the session.
Snacks: Pregnancy can make you feel hungry more often, so feel free to bring some snacks that you enjoy. Having a quick bite to eat during breaks can help keep your energy levels up and ensure you feel your best throughout the session.
Breaks: Pregnancy can be tiring, so if you need a moment to rest, catch your breath, or take care of any personal needs, please let me know. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease throughout the entire session.
Remember, this is your special moment, and I want you to enjoy every minute of it. If you have any other specific requests or concerns, please don't hesitate to share them with me.
Open communication is key! Please discuss any specific ideas, preferences, and any special requests beforehand, so that I can ensure that your session is personalised and tailored to your vision on the day. If you are happy to trust me to do what I do best, that’s absolutely fine, you can just let me know that too.
Motherhood and the preparation for it is a whirlwind. It’s a non-stop adventure filled with endless tasks and responsibilities.

I'm passionate about creating a beautiful legacy for you and your little ones. As a maternity, newborn and family photographer, I understand the importance of capturing these precious moments that you'll cherish for a lifetime. My goal is to provide you with an experience that goes beyond just taking photos. With my professional skills and experience, I'll capture high-quality, timeless, and artistic portraits that truly reflect your unique story.
I have a heartfelt and inviting approach. Together, we'll create a personalised experience that is tailored to you and your family. Your satisfaction is my top priority.
I recommend booking your maternity session around 20 weeks. The best time for these sessions is between 28 and 36 weeks, preferably 30-34 weeks. This timeframe allows you to have a lovely round belly and still be comfortable during the session. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
For mini maternity sessions, the price is $600. Full sessions have a session fee of $150, which covers my time and expertise. The fee also includes pre-session planning, local travel, image preparation, and a viewing and ordering consultation. Images and products are sold separately. There are no images included with the session fee. Digital image packages start from $600, and printed products start from $300. For more information, please inquire. I'd love to hear from you!
After our photo session, I'll spend many hours carefully selecting and editing the best portraits for you. Within 4 weeks, I'll reach out to you to schedule a relaxed viewing and ordering appointment. You'll get to see all the stunning images on a big 65-inch screen at my home studio in Amberley. I'll be there to help you choose the ones you absolutely love. I have special software that makes the selection process easier, and I'll provide my advice and expertise to help you decide. Can't wait for you to see your beautiful photos!
No worries! I've worked with many people who have felt the same way. I'll give you gentle prompts and guide you into flattering poses and lighting, so you'll look and feel your best.
Absolutely! Including your family in your maternity photos is a wonderful idea. We can schedule a special family maternity session where we'll capture those precious moments together. I'll also dedicate time to capture beautiful individual portraits of just you.
I'm beyond thrilled that you chose me as your photographer for this precious time. I seriously can't get enough of newborns, and I consider myself so lucky to be surrounded by these little bundles of joy.
This guide will give you all the info you need to make the most out of your session. Trust me, it's in your best interest to give it a good read.

I'm here to help and make this experience as amazing as possible for you. Let's create some beautiful memories together!
When baby arrives, please contact me as soon as possible. Although I schedule a limited number of newborn sessions, it's important that I know about your baby's arrival within the first couple of days. That way, I can make sure to accommodate all the little ones and schedule your session within the first two weeks of your baby's life too.
Here's why that timing is important. Newborns change and grow rapidly. During the first couple of weeks, babies tend to be sleepier and more easily posed, allowing for those adorable curled-up poses that everyone loves. Babies are typically more settled and less prone to colic or discomfort in the first few weeks, which contributes to a smoother and more relaxed session.
Please keep your baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session. I know it might sound challenging, but trust me, it's super important for a successful experience.
Even if your little one is usually a sleepy baby, they still need this extra awake time to get into a deep sleep, which is required for the photoshoot. Since I'll be gently touching and moving them around, that wakeful period will help them achieve that deep sleep. If baby arrives after a morning of sleep, it can take hours just to settle them into deep sleep.
Ideally, your morning routine should go like this: wake up (around 6-7), feed, nap (around 8-9), feed again, and then the wakeful period from 9-11. This way, we'll have the best chance of capturing those precious shots.
Here are some tips to keep your baby awake before the session:
· Bath time! Great to keep them awake and babies get tired after a bath. Perfect for our session.
· Tummy time and floor exercises. Encourage tummy time and other floor exercises to help keep your baby awake and active.
· Keep your baby active and engaged by walking around and talking to them.
· No pacifiers. Avoid using pacifiers to help keep your baby awake.
· If you have a long drive to my place, try using a cool cloth on their cheek or find other ways to keep them alert in the car. We don't want them using up their sleep time during the journey. It’s a good idea to have Mum or Dad in the back talking to baby.
· Please, if your baby is really struggling and becomes overtired or starts crying, don't stress. Let them have a short nap. We want them to be comfortable and happy during the session.
Newborn sessions are many hours. If I am photographing siblings, I will do this first, followed by family photos. After the siblings have had their photos taken, it's a good idea to have someone take them away from the studio. By that point, they might be feeling a bit tired, hungry, and ready for a break. Plus, the studio can get warm and we want to maintain a peaceful environment for the newborn photos that will follow. If your partner wants to stay and watch the newborn photos, it would be a good idea to organise for a friend or family member to be on call and ready to pick up the siblings once they're done, as this part of the session will be another couple hours. If your child is older and in school, they might be okay sitting and waiting if you bring along a device or something else to keep them entertained.
Your session will be held in my cosy home studio at 51 Willowside Place in Amberley. When you arrive, just park up the driveway, follow the path to the front door, and give the doorbell a ring. I'll be there to greet you.
I create a warm, inviting, and homely atmosphere in my studio that makes it easy for you to feel connected and 'at home'. And if you feel like taking a little snooze, you wouldn't be the first! I want you to feel at ease and enjoy the experience. I don't rush sessions and allow plenty of time to cater to the unpredictability of newborns and children.
In the studio, you'll relax on a comfy couch and witness all the adorable moments as I capture stunning photos of your precious newborn.
If you're running a bit late, please send me a text on 027 320 3646. Don't stress too much if it's just 5-10 minutes, but if you're running more than 30 minutes late, I might need to reschedule.
If you happen to arrive early, please hang tight until your session time. I might still be setting up and want everything to be perfect for you.
You're more than welcome to take "behind-the-scenes" style photos and videos from where you're sitting, with me in them. Just avoid taking close-up shots that could be mistaken as the final photos. If you do take some behind-the-scenes photos or videos, I'd love it if you could share them with me on Facebook or Instagram messenger.
No need to worry about outfits, props, wraps, headbands, or bonnets for your baby. I have everything covered. Just bring your usual nappy bag with a change of clothes, feeding supplies, nappies, wipes, and a dummy if you have one. The dummy can help soothe your baby in between poses. Please bring baby dressed in an easy-to-remove outfit and please, no tight clothes that will leave marks on the skin such as socks.
Newborn sessions can sometimes last around 4 hours, so it's good to plan ahead. I usually schedule sessions around 11am, which means it will run through lunchtime. It's a great idea to bring some food and snacks with you, especially if you're breastfeeding or if you're bringing siblings along.
If we're photographing siblings, please bring along some snacks and a treat. Just make sure the snacks are non-messy and small, like yoghurt drops, so we can feed them slowly if needed. And having a small reward or treat on hand can be helpful too, just in case we need to employ a little bribe to keep things fun and cooperative.
I'll have hot and cold drinks available for you, but it's a good idea for Mum to bring a drink bottle too. I also usually have a snack for you, but feel free to bring something extra if you'd like. Just let me know if you have any dietary requirements, and I'll make sure to accommodate them.
Conveniently, there's a French bakery, pie shop, cafes, dairy, and sushi shop just a minute up the road. If you're bringing someone along with you to the session, they can easily pop down and grab anything you like. It's great to have those options nearby and you are welcome to eat while here.
Safety is my top priority during newborn sessions. Please let me know if there were any birth or health complications for either mum or baby, as it's important for me to be aware of any special considerations.
If your baby is going to have a tongue-tie fixed close to the session date, please let me know. We can reschedule to give them a few days to recover. It's important for them to have some time to rest and heal before the session.
My sessions are baby led, meaning I won't force any poses that could potentially be uncomfortable or unsafe for your little one. As a trained professional with over 5 years of experience, I have the knowledge and expertise to safely pose and handle newborn babies. My confidence in this comes not only from my training but also from personal experience, as my own daughter spent time in the neonatal unit at the start of her life.
To further ensure your baby's safety, I follow strict protocols such as using clean and sanitised props, maintaining a comfortable temperature in the studio, and always staying nearby. Your baby's well-being is of utmost importance to me, and I will take every precaution necessary to create a safe and secure environment.
In my studio, I keep the temperature around 26 degrees, which might feel a bit warm for adults, but it's perfect for keeping newborn babies nice and warm. This temperature helps them feel more relaxed and content during the session.
To ensure that parents are comfortable too, I recommend dressing in layers. This way, you can easily adjust your clothing to your own comfort level.
My studio is filled with locally and internationally sourced props, wraps, textures, headbands, bonnets, and cuddlies to style your session. Don't worry about bringing or buying anything for your session. I'll take care of all the styling during the session based on our pre consultation. You can just relax and enjoy the experience while I create adorable and personalised setups for your little one.
When you and baby arrive, it's important for baby to be ready for a nice, full feed. Once you're here, I'll undress baby and swaddle them before feeding. The key is to make sure there's plenty of milk, whether it's breastfeeding, pumped milk or supplemental formula. I want to ensure that your baby has a full tummy for the session. Don't worry if you're still getting the hang of breastfeeding. We can definitely work with pumped milk or formula to make sure baby is well-fed.
During the session, you'll need to feed your baby on and off to keep them sleepy and happy. I've got a pillow if you're breastfeeding. And if you're using formula, I have a kitchen where you can prepare it. I want to make sure your baby is comfortable and well-fed throughout the session.
Bring a couple of spare bottles of formula or breast milk if you're expressing. This way, I can give baby a quick feed while they're in a pose or set up if needed.
Choosing the perfect outfits for your family can make a big difference in how your photos turn out.
Natural tones like warm whites, cream, tan, brown, rust, deep green, and navy all look fantastic. It's best to avoid wearing a lot of black or strong distracting patterns, graphics or illustrations, as they can take away from the overall look.
For the mums, go for something nice and neutral that's still comfortable. A dress would be a great choice, or if you prefer a more casual look, plain pants with a nice top or jumper will work well. And for the dads, opt for plain t-shirts, ideally with a v-neck and sleeves. I also love wool jerseys. Just try to avoid any logos or patterns as they can stand out too much in the photos.
If your partner will be joining you in the photos, it's a good idea to coordinate your outfits. You don't have to match perfectly, but choosing complementary colours (warm, light, or dark) or styles (casual or formal) can create a cohesive and visually pleasing look. Remember, comfort is key! Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident.
For older sisters, I have a range of beautiful dresses in the studio for girls up to 5 years old. You're welcome to use these, but it's also a good idea to come prepared with your own outfit or have a chat with me beforehand to see if I have something that matches your child's style. I do have a more limited selection for girls up to 7 years old, so it's always good to have a backup plan. As for hair, keeping it natural or in curls is perfect. If you'd like to use our headbands, just make sure they're free of any accessories. Of course, you can also bring along your own options, and we can discuss them during the session.
For older brothers, I have a limited range of neutral pants, shorts, and shirts for boys up to 5 years old. If your boy is older than that or if you prefer to bring your own outfit, it's best to dress him in a nice plain top and tan, navy, or denim pants/shorts. It’s a good idea to let me know if you plan to use one of my outfits so we can discuss prior and I can pull something for you.
Feel free to send me photos of your outfit options, and I'll be more than happy to take a look and offer some advice.
I encourage and love capturing those special moments with the whole family. I completely understand that as new mums, you might not feel your best after giving birth, but trust me, it's my job to make you feel great and capture beautiful photos of your family. You'll love the memories we create together!
If I am photographing just parents and your newborn, I'll start by taking all the newborn photos first. Then, towards the end of the session, we'll move on to the parent photos. You can feel free to wear something comfortable for the majority of the session and bring your nice clothes along to change into when it's time for the parent photos.
If there are siblings involved, I'll start with the sibling photos, then move on to the family photos, and finally, we'll do the newborn photos. The sibling and family part will take about 1-2 hours, and then we'll spend another 2 hours on the newborn photos. If you'd like, you can bring a more comfortable outfit to change into after the family photos.
If things aren't going smoothly right away, try not to stress. Children can sense this and it can make them feel the same way. If necessary, we can take a break and start with the newborn photos. Giving the kids some time to relax and regroup can make a big difference.
Family and sibling photos can sometimes take a bit of time, especially when little ones are involved. It's completely normal for them to need some patience and understanding during the process. Just take it easy and let the moments unfold naturally.
Taking individual portraits of the children is a wonderful way to capture their unique personalities. It only takes a few extra minutes to do between the sibling and family photos, and it's definitely worth it. Let me know if you're interested in these portraits, and I'll make sure to give each child their own special moment in front of the camera.
Be ready to get close and connected. It might feel a bit weird at first, but trust me, it looks amazing in the pictures. I might gently guide your heads and arms to get the perfect shot, so just give me a heads up if you're not comfortable with any touching.
Please both clean and trim your nails before the photo session. It makes a big difference when we do photos with your hands in them. If you like to paint your nails, applying a fresh coat a day or two before the session will help avoid any chips. A coat of nude nail polish is a nice natural look for your photos.
Please avoid using fake tan before your photo session. The undertones of too much fake tan don’t look great in photos, especially when you're next to your newborn.
If there are any photos you have seen on my Facebook or Instagram that you love, please let me know so that I can keep that in mind for your session.
I might need to use a pacifier to help keep your baby calm and comfortable while I'm posing them. It's okay if you haven't used one before or don't plan on using one regularly. This is just for the few hours that I'll be working with your baby to make sure they're content. Using a pacifier during the session won't create a long-term habit for your baby. However, if you'd prefer that I don't use a pacifier, just let me know at the beginning of the session and I'll respect your preference.
Open communication is key! Please discuss any specific ideas, preferences, and any special requests beforehand, so that I can ensure that your session is personalised and tailored to your vision on the day. If you are happy to trust me to do what I do best, that’s absolutely fine, you can just let me know that too.

Littlies sessions are designed to be a quick, fun, bespoke portrait session to capture the essence of childhood through the months/years. Those cheeky expressions, long lashes and everything that makes them so uniquely them. Some fleeting and some everlasting.
I'm thrilled that you chose me as your photographer to document this precious time.
This guide will give you all the info you need to make the most out of your session. Trust me, it's in your best interest to give it a good read.
I want to make sure we capture those priceless moments perfectly! If anything in the guide is unclear or if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to ensure you have time to come in, clean faces, brush hair and choose any outfits/props you may want to use before your session start time. (if your session includes the use of the studio wardrobe) As these sessions are scheduled back to back please ensure you do not arrive late as this may impact the time we have available for your session. Late arrivals will result in a shorter session time or cancellation.
If you are not using our wardrobe here are some tips for choosing your own outfit. I recommend avoiding large logos, bright primary colours and characters on clothes. Light neutrals, and soft toned colours all look amazing.
The studio is in our white brick home and you are welcome to park up the drive or on the road. Once you arrive, please follow the path to the front door. We have a Love Liss Creatives sign on the door so you will know you are in the right place. My Mum/amazing assistant, Judith, will be here to greet you if I am busy photographing.
For young children, I recommend having a favourite toy, song or game prepared to help get their attention and encourage some smiley fun.
WHEN AND HOW DO WE GET TO SEE OUR PHOTOS?
After our photo session, I'll carefully select and edit the best portraits for you. Within 3 weeks, you will be emailed an online gallery of your pre-purchased photo/s to download.

We will pencil in your sitter session at your newborn ordering appointment for approximately 6-8 months old. Once your baby is sitting confidently, please get in touch with me to schedule your session. And if I haven't heard from you, I'll reach out to confirm the details.
Every baby reaches milestones at their own pace. But generally, around 8 to 9 months is a fantastic age for these adorable shots. By then, most babies are sitting independently and are just the right amount of squishy before they start zooming around!
If your baby isn’t sitting by 9 months old, that's perfectly fine. We can have a chat about your child's milestones, and together we can decide whether to slightly delay the session or design a session that celebrates their current milestones. We can capture adorable moments like tummy time, smiles, assisted sitting poses, and even their experiences with solids. Rest assured, we'll still perfectly document their growth and development since their newborn session.
If you think our session time will interrupt your little one's nap time please let me know so we can try to schedule around it. We want a well-rested happy baby.
Sitter sessions usually last around 1 hour, but your little one is the boss. We'll take the time needed to capture those adorable moments and make sure they're comfortable throughout the session.
If your child is shy in front of the camera, don’t worry. I will take the time to connect with them at their level and ensure that we go at their own pace. If there are any special toys or items that they find comforting, please feel free to bring them along. It's important to remember that not every photo needs to have them looking directly at the camera. Sometimes, the most beautiful and authentic moments are captured when they're simply being themselves.

If you want to have the images to share for your child's first birthday, scheduling the session for around 11 months would be ideal. This way, you'll have the photos ready to celebrate their special day. However, if that's not a dealbreaker for you, you can schedule the session as close to their actual birthday as possible. It's such a magical experience that captures their joy and excitement!
Can we have a cake smash for other birthdays?
Absolutely! We can make cake smash sessions a fun tradition for any birthday. Let's chat about the options and ideas you have in mind. I'm excited to help you create special and memorable moments for each birthday celebration!
I begin by taking some adorable individual portraits of your child. It's a great way to capture cute expressions before we introduce the cake. Then comes the messy and sensory fun part as your little one gets to "smash" their birthday cake! They can dive right in, explore the textures, and have a blast making a mess. After all the cake smashing excitement, we wrap up the session with a bubble bath in my baby clawfoot bath. The entire experience is truly delightful, and you'll have wonderful memories to cherish forever.
Your little one will get messy and so will their outfit, and the outfit of anyone who picks them up to move them or clean them. Please ensure you either wear something you don't mind getting dirty or bring a change of clothes. I would hate for you to stain your favourite outfit. Baby's move around fast and I may require your assistance to place the baby back onto the backdrops.
After the smash we will wash your baby off in my mini claw foot tub with lots of bubble fun. If your child has a particular baby shampoo or bubble bath they use please bring that, along with their baby towel. I do have a baby bubble bath available.
Do this the week of your Smash: It's very important to prep your one year old by giving them cake before the session. With a baby who has never eaten cake before, we could run into a number of difficulties like the child not liking the cake or wanting to eat it because it is new or having unknown allergies.
I will sometimes lean in and give the baby a piece of cake while I am shooting to get them to like it, and the last thing on earth I want to hear is “Oh, be careful, that’s his first bite of real food!”
A trial run works in your favour, so do it! If your little one isn't a huge mess maker, then I suggest a trial run. Buy a cheap plastic tablecloth and let your little one sit on the floor, give them a tub of yoghurt or whipped cream or get them a cupcake or mini cake from the grocery store and let them go to town. I've found that allowing them to do this before the smash makes them a little more comfortable sitting on the ground trying to eat cake here with lights and a camera in their face.
The day of the Session! Please give your child a snack and not a full meal if they wake up around the time of the session, we want them to be hungry (but not angry) when we smash some cake! Please bring all their favourite treats, toys and items just in case they have a meltdown! (It happens, they are 1!) Don't wear your best clothes in case you get frosted!
Prepare to work out a little or a lot! If your baby is mobile, you will likely be placing him/her back in the spot where I will be photographing them. You might sweat but it will be worth it!
Just a little Warning - Sometimes the babies hate the cake, me, and well let’s face it, life. It's tough being one. Sometimes they love it. How they eat at home in a highchair has nothing to do with how they will eat a whole cake, sitting on the floor in a strange place in front of people being crazy with a big camera in front of their face. Stage fright is a real thing, so just come in with an open mind and a relaxed demeanour. It could go either way so expectations for how long your little one will last during the entire session should be reasonable based on their personality and ability to adapt in new situations.
Baby Safety:
Safety is my top priority during my sessions. Please let me know if there are any health conditions, as it's important for me to be aware of any special considerations.
Your session will be held in my cosy home studio at 51 Willowside Place in Amberley. When you arrive, just park up the driveway, follow the path to the front door, and give the doorbell a ring. I'll be there to greet you.
I create a warm, inviting, and homely atmosphere in my studio. I don't rush sessions and allow plenty of time to cater to the unpredictability of children.
In the studio, you'll relax on a comfy couch and witness all the adorable moments as I capture stunning photos.
I have all the outfits, props, and headbands we will need for the baby.
Just remember to bring a towel and a change of clothes for after the bath. It's also a good idea to bring your usual nappy bag with snacks and water for your little one. If your child takes a little while to warm up, bringing their favourite toy and snacks can help them settle in and feel more comfortable.
If you have any favourite or sentimental items you'd like to include, just let me know beforehand so we can plan accordingly.
Bring something your baby LOVES to eat! That means if they love strawberries or kiwifruit, broccoli or cucumbers, donuts or chicken nuggets then bring it with you! If baby doesn’t want to eat cake we want them to want to eat something so PLEASE pack food your child likes that is small and easily picked up and placed behind/in/around the cake. Pouches and yoghurt won’t work, it needs to be something solid. Think of things they like that are hand held and small that we can hide in or around the cake. Don’t be shocked if they don’t want to eat the cake, it’s completely normal! They are used to eating tiny pieces of food and we put a huge cake in front of them, most babies are totally confused! Some are extremely happy! Help make it easier by bringing small portions of their favourites!
Summary of what I recommend bringing:
- change of diapers
- baby wipes
- spare outfit for Mum and Baby.
- baby bubble bath
- baby towel
- cake for smashing
- babies favourite food
- a bag to put any dirty outfits in.
The cake is not included in the session, but I can give you some recommendations. Since it's a new experience for your little one and allergies can be unpredictable, it's best for parents to handle the cake selection.
My backdrops won't stain unless the cake or icing has vegetable shortening in it. If purchasing your cake, please ensure you ask if it has vegetable shortening in the ingredients. It is sometimes used in buttercream icing or in place of butter. If my backdrop does in fact stain because of vegetable shortening a $350 fee will apply.
Choosing a cake is important from a taste, look and feel standpoint. I want it to look good in the photos, but it should also smash well, taste good to the child and feel right in their hands. Some kids will be picky and won't like the general cake or icing texture so please keep this in mind.
The cake should be made of soft icing like buttercream – not fondant. Fondant won’t spread or be really messy in a photo like buttercream or store icing will be. Colour wise, you want to avoid red, because it can look like blood. I also recommend avoiding chocolate because it can look like poop. Any other colour is usually good.
I recommend vanilla cakes or sponge. It’s the easiest to handle taste wise for a baby new to eating solids, and it doesn’t overwhelm with extra colour.
Size wise, a round 6-10 inch cake is best. Smaller is better.
It's completely normal if your child doesn't want to "smash" the cake during the session. We understand that some kids may not be comfortable with making a mess with food. To help them get used to the idea, you can do a test run at home with some cake and cream, so they can explore and play with it in a familiar environment.
If your little one still doesn't want to smash the cake during the session, no problem! You can bring along some of their favourite snacks that we can place near the cake to encourage their participation. We want them to have a positive and enjoyable experience. And if needed, we can even cut a piece of cake to get them started. Remember, there's no pressure on the kids—they get to decide how they want to engage with the cake. Let's make it a fun and stress-free session!

We will discuss your vision for the session to determine the best location for you. My personal recommendation for Family sessions is Pegasus Beach. It provides a lot of variety with tussocks, driftwood, sand walkways, the ocean, reflections and most of all beautiful light and open spaces.
Capturing magical moments during your family session is all about the light. That's why I exclusively schedule sessions during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. That is the hour before sunset and the hour after sunrise.
During these times, the light is soft/flattering, warm, and creates a dreamy atmosphere that perfectly highlights your special family moments. It's when nature paints the sky with breathtaking colours, casting a golden glow to your photos.
Follow these tips in choosing the perfect outfit to make a difference in how your photos turn out:
1. Coordinate, but don't match: It's nice to have a cohesive look but avoid wearing identical outfits. Instead, choose complementary colours or a colour palette that works well together. You can choose warm, light, or dark shades, depending on the vibe you want to create. And when it comes to styles, you can all match with a casual or formal theme.
2. Choose items for the entire family as if you were creating one outfit. Remember, when coordinating outfits for your session, there should be some commonality among all the members of the group.
3. Keep it simple: Opt for clothing with minimal pattern and no logos, as they can be distracting in photos. Solid colours or subtle textures tend to work best.
4. Dress comfortably: Make sure everyone feels comfortable in their outfits. Avoid clothing that is too tight or restrictive, as it can affect the overall mood of the session.
5. Colours: Natural tones like warm whites, cream, warm khaki, brown, rust, deep green, and navy all look fantastic. Introducing blush tones can also work well if you opt for a pastel palette. It's best to avoid wearing a lot of black. Neutral tones work best because they allow your skin tones and facial expressions to be the focus of the image. They are not distracting and are always a timeless, classic choice for portraits.
So what does that’s all mean? Let’s be more specific:
Mums - go for something nice and neutral that's still comfortable. A dress would be a great choice, or if you prefer a more casual look, plain pants with a nice top or jumper will work well.
Dads - plain t-shirts/tops, ideally with a v-neck and sleeves with shorts, pants or dress jeans. I also love wool jerseys. Just try to avoid any logos or patterns as they can stand out too much in the photos.
Girls - a cute dress is a great choice for little girls. Something comfortable with simple patterns or solid colours that complement the overall colour scheme. Another option is pairing a skirt with a coordinating top. This allows for more flexibility in mixing and matching colours and patterns. If it’s cold, it’s a good idea to bring a cute cardi and neutral leggings that can be removed.
Boys - neutral pants, shorts, and shirts. A nice plain top and tan, navy, or denim pants/shorts look great.
Babies - for younger babies rompers are always a good choice. If it's cold outdoors, a cute cardi and leggings can be a good choice for the girls and a knitted jumper and pants for the boys.
Feel free to send me photos of your outfit options, and I'll be more than happy to take a look and offer some advice.
Footwear - for a beach photoshoot, I recommend embracing barefoot! However, for moving between different locations I suggest bringing some jandals to wear. They'll keep your feet comfortable and protected while we explore different areas.
Remember, these are just suggestions to help you get started. The most important thing is to wear something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable. I am happy for you to send photos of your outfit options for advice.
Getting professional hair and makeup done for your family session is not necessary, but it can add an extra boost of confidence and make you feel amazing!
If we have howling wind or rain, we'll reschedule our session. I'll always reach out to you the day before or the day of our session to confirm. Outdoor photography is always exciting because it's never the same. I cannot guarantee specific weather, but whether it is moody clouds or golden or pastel light your session will be unique to you and a beautiful reminder of this day. Remember to come prepared with appropriate clothing layers or umbrellas in case of unexpected changes in weather. It’s a good idea to bring a jacket for between photos if it's windy or cold.
Your comfort is essential during a family session. Here are a few tips to keep you comfortable throughout the shoot.
Hydration: We recommend bringing a water bottle to keep everyone refreshed throughout the session.
Snacks: As our sessions are at sunset, this sometimes works out around dinner time so feel free to bring some snacks that you enjoy for yourself and the kids. Having a quick bite to eat during breaks can ensure you feel your best throughout the session.
Breaks: If you need a moment to rest, or take care of any personal needs, please let me know. I want you to feel comfortable and at ease throughout the entire session.
